루이즈 부르주아의 특별전 <Structures of Existence: The Cells>이 3월 18일부터 9월 4일까지 스페인 구겐하임 빌바오 미술관에서 개최된다. 실존주의 예술을 추구하며 인간관계에 초점을 맞춘 작업을 선보여온 부르주아가 1986년부터 작업한 <셀Cell> 시리즈는 생명체의 세포, 은밀한 은신처이자 억압하는 감옥이라는 모순된 개념들을 상징한다. ‘셀’의 외부구조는 문, 창문, 컨테이너 등 건축요소들을 개조한 것이며, 내부에 배치된 향수병, 램프, 거울 등은 작가의 자전적인 일상에서 차용한 오브제들로, 개인의 내면을 뜻하는 동시에 신체의 장기들을 의미한다. 외부 세계로부터 내면을 분리시켜 각각을 개별의 소우주로 형상화한 약 28개의 ‘셀’ 시리즈 작품들은 관객들로 하여금 개인의 내면을 들여다보고 감정의 긴장들을 완화시켜주는 기회를 제공할 것이다.

Louise Bourgeois Structures of Existence: The Cells will be one view from March 18 to September 4, 2016 at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. In her works, Bourgeois pursued the theme of existentialism while focusing in human relationships. The Cells series were started in 1986 and contain a dual symbolism that can be interpreted as lairs, or as spaces of protection or reclusion. The outer structure of a Cell is made of doors, windows, industrial containers, and other architectural elements. The objects inside them come from the artist’s own biographical context: perfume bottles, lamps, mirror and others. These represent the inner world of the artist, and at the same time parts of the human body. Viewers will be able to discover and experience 28 works from The Cells series, each an individual microcosm separating the internal from the external world with the aim to search the inner self and relieve emotional tension.
